Retreat Opportunities

Happy Hearts is intending to host two separate Day of Mindfulness gatherings at the Riverdale Rink House this summer.  While details are yet to be confirmed, please feel free to “save the dates” for both Sunday, July 28th, and Sunday, August 25th.  Details including how to register will be forthcoming in the June and summer newsletters.

Edmonton Insight Meditation will host Saturday morning ‘mini’ retreats in Riverdale beginning this fall.  The morning retreats will be held on the third Saturday of the month at the Riverdale Rink House at 9928 – 92nd St. Sitting and walking meditation periods will alternate with dharma teaching and discussion in the Theravadan Insight Meditation tradition.

All levels are welcome to attend on a drop-in basis. Please bring your own meditation equipment and contribute towards the rental costs on a dana basis. Please plan to arrive 20 minutes early to set up.  If you have any questions or would like further information, please e-mail:

The retreat is led by Dr. Shante Smalls, a senior teacher from New York, who  focuses on the issue of diversity (including race and gender) in Buddhist practice and communities. The retreat is open to all levels of meditation, religious affiliations and sanghas, and backgrounds. Cost is $20-$50 on a sliding scale. Professional development opportunities that integrate mindfulness in practice is a field that has gained significant momentum over the past several years.  The Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto is one of Canada’s leading providers of professional development in mindfulness interventions.  They do also provide learning opportunities in western Canada.
